Massage Therapy REQUIRED LICENSES

Legal Structure

Whether an Massage Therapy online, home, store, concession stand or a mobile cart, you will need to first select among solesole owner/proprietor, partnership, LLC or corporation, all of which also require a General Business License (not a specific license to your type of business) as well. If your trade name is a business name other than your full personal legal name, you will need to file a DBA . For instance, your name is John Doe, and you do business as Best Massage Therapy By John, the name must be registered with aDBA Biz Name because it is not your full legal name. Also, note that whatever item that you sell or lease and it is an item that can be touched (i.e., tangible such as equipment, toys, merchandise, electronics, prepared food) requires a state sales tax ID ( Sellers Permit ) to either buy or sell the items or products wholesale and or sell them retail. If you are hiring workers anytime soon, you will need aFederal EIN and a State EIN (employer identification number). Other instances that you will need a federal tax ID are: if you are a partnership, an independent contractor, and a corporation or anLLC . You can also obtain a federal tax ID as a Massage Therapy sole proprietor and use it as a business tax ID in the place of a social security number. However, you will still need other registrations, such as licenses, an assumed business name DBA, and tax IDs as described above. Finally, even one person, Massage Therapy sole owner/proprietors working from home or just online can form a LLC or incorporate, in which case, they will not need to file a DBA.exactly how do go about getting a license for massage therapy? i dont sell anything, im trying to figure out what i need to get started on a massage therapy home business I'm looking to start a massage business in Boulder. You can choose to be a(n) Massage Therapy :

  • Sole Proprietor,
  • LLC,
  • Corporation or
  • Partnership.
After you decide and select your business entity, you need licensing.

Skillman Business Tax Registration ( Business License)
All businesses including home, online or mobile BUSINESS need a BUSINESS license because they are BUSINESSES.

A(n) Massage Therapy business using a DBA Doing Business As Trade Name in Somerset County , i.e., starting businesses using a company name other than the legal (given name) owner's name, need a(n) DBA Doing Business As Trade Name Registration. ย  For example, you start a(n) Massage Therapy business and you call it "Ultra Massage Therapy Co". You will need to file a trade firm name for it.

Also, keep in mind that in NJ though, a business license and a DBA is necessary for most businesses but if your business sells any taxable items, you will need a sales tax ID number. ย (A.K.A state id, wholesale, resale, reseller certificate, about $39 for most states).
Seller's Permit

Note: All businesses need a federal tax ID number except sole proprietors that are not employers and are not independent contractors.
An independent contractor is a self employed business person that receives more than $600 per year from anyone of his or her clients.
IRS rule: The client must issue a 1099 form to the independent contractor and the independent contractor must have a federal tax ID. However, even sole owners may obtain a federal ID and use it as a business tax ID instead of using their own social security number as a business tax ID number.
However, all other licenses that apply to sole proprietors as discussed here are requited regardless of getting a federal tax ID number.

If you are thinking of hiring help, you will need a state employer ID and an IRS number employer ID. I.e., a NJ Federal Tax Id Number ($29) ย and a(n) NJ ย State Employer Tax Numberย ย

Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing (about $49 plus state and legal newspaper publication fees) in Skillman,ย Incorporate in NJ ย orย form a(n) NJ LLC
.ย

If you will set up a corporation or form an LLC, you will not have to file a DBA (Doing Business As) unless your corproration or LLC name will be different that the busienss name you will trade under. Businesses that use the full legal name of the owner as a business name do not need to register an assumed business name. So, for example, your name is "John X Doe" and you use that as a business name.

If you do form an Massage Therapy llc or incorporate (about $49 plus state fees for most states) your Massage Therapy business instead of just filing a fictitious business name (dba), it will help you avoid legal and financial personal liability arising out of business transactions and you will not have to register the Skillman business name. Instead of filing a Somerset County fictitious business name (our service fee includes dba business name filing and legal paper publication) you can elect to incorporate in NJ or form an NJ LLC (starts @ $49 plus state fee for most states & includes bylaws and LLC operating agreement)..
